Rafting the Rogue River and then the sunset

An early view of the white pelicans that hang out in Klamath Falls before carpooling to drive 100 miles over the Cascade Mountains to the Rogue River.

who

Who would have ever thought that water gun battles would be so much fun. Due to not having a water proof camera, there are no photos.

And after 3.5 hours of rafting on the Rogue River with five adults and five teenagers, we recall our battles with the water guns. Outside temp 100+ and water temp was about 53 degrees.

Lava National Monument, Underground Lava Tunnels

Lava National Monument is approximately 50 miles south of Klamath Falls in California. We were standing on top of a horizontal volcano instead of a vertical volcano inside of a mountain. The cave was made from hot lava and the area is called a tunnel. I took the tour with the guide. Had to buy the plastic helmet and the park service provided the large light. I don't love caves, but the NPS made the visit informative.

MT. Shasta from Lava Petroglyph Point. Petroglyphs are rock art. The images are symbols. The numerous motifs are super-imposed on top of one another indicating that this is an especially attractive orpowerful site. In 1872 this are was under water. J. D. Howard an early explorer of the lava beds is said to have painted here. Japanese during the World War II who were contained in the internment camp at Newell, they left their inscriptions also.

That is Mount Shasta in the distance. It is hard to photography in broad day light because the snow capped mountain disappears against the blue sky.

Animals of the Bay Area

The buck, deer, and fawn live around the condos at the Village where cousin Caroline lives. Also frequently seen are wild turkeys. You can tell they have sophisticated appetites.

Point Lobos State Reserve

The long-necked, all-black sea birds are cormorants. Two specieis next here--the Brand's Cormorant, which forms a large colony on Bird Island and the Pelagic Cormorant, which nexts in small groups down the side of cliffs and rocks.

The dark brown or black mamals are the California Sea Lions.

The name "Point Lobos" refers to sea lions and their barking. The earlier Spanish namae was punta de los Lobos Marinos" translalting to the "Point of the Sea Wolves"

Habor Seals are much smaller than sea lions and look like swollen cigars 5-6 feet long. Their color varies f rom light gray or tan to almost black, and they are nearly always spotted. unlike sea lions, their ears are not visible, and the short rear flippers, shich point aaway from the body, are unsuited for moving about on land. These usually silent animals frequently bask on rocks just above the water where a quick getaway is possible. Harbor Seals like here all year. Their pups, born on shoreline rocks and beaches in April and May, can swim almost from birth and require only a few weeks of maternal care.
